Cherokee County Lights Up the Big Screen

Lately it seems that everyone is coming to Georgia to make their films and television series. And let’s admit it: we all take at least a little pride in sharing that fact whenever the topic comes up! So when can we actually expect to see some of these A-list stars in our hometowns on the big screen?

According to the Cherokee Office of Economic Development and their Camera-Ready liaison Videssa Ormsby, there are five feature films that were shot in Cherokee County alone that will be in theaters in the next few months.

Sully Scoop OTPSeptember 9, 2016: Sully
Starring Tom Hanks and directed by Clint Eastwood.
This film tells the story of Chesley Sullenberger, who became a hero after gliding his plane along the water in the Hudson River, saving all of the flight’s 155 crew and passengers. Filmed in Milton and Gwinnett Technical College.

November 11, 2016: Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk
Billy Lynn's Long Halftime WalkStarring Vin Diesel, Kristin Stewart, Steve Martin, newcomer Garrett Hedlund and directed by Academy award winner Ang Lee.
19-year-old Billy Lynn is brought home for a victory tour after a harrowing Iraq battle. Through flashbacks the film shows what really happened to his squad — contrasting the realities of war with America’s perceptions.

Hidden FiguresJanuary 13, 2017: Hidden Figures
Starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monet and Kevin Costner.
A team of African-American women provide NASA with important mathematical data needed to launch the program’s first successful space missions

The FounderJanuary 20, 2017: The Founder
Starring Michael Keaton, Linda Cardellini and Patrick Wilson.
The story of McDonald’s founder, Ray Kroc. This film was originally scheduled for release in August 2016, but was pushed back for Academy Award consideration. Could be very exciting to see Canton on the big screen in an Oscar contender!

April, 2017: Champion
ChampionStarring Gary Graham, Andrew Cheney, Kera O’Bryon.
In the supercharged world of dirt track racing, a single mistake causes the lives of two men to change forever. One must fight for his family, the other must fight to forgive. This smaller film was shot primarily in Woodstock with support of many in the community.

September 29, 2017: American Made (Formerly ‘Mena’)
American MadeStarring Tom Cruise, Domhnall Gleeson, Jesse Plemons.
A pilot lands work for the CIA and as a drug runner in the south during the 1980s. Tom Cruise and his crew spent a lot of time filming in Ballground, and fans and residents said he was nothing but nice!

We are so excited to see all of these films hit the big screen in the next few months and Jason Bateman’s Netflix series hit the little screen!
