The holidays are so busy that sometimes we just can’t make it to the gym to give an hour. Shopping, school parties, end-of–the-year doctor appointments — the list is endless.

Here are a few very effective workouts under 20 minutes for you to try on your own or with your family. It might be fun to get the kids involved and see if they can beat you. Kids LOVE challenging their parents! All you need is a timer and some water, says Fitness Trainer Lori Forrester.

Here are some suggestions:

10 rounds for time (fastest time wins)

  • 10 pushups
  • 10 sit-ups
  • 10 body weight squats

10-1 reps of burpees and sit-ups for time (fastest time wins)

  • 10 burpees, 10 sit-ups
  • 9 burpees, 9 sit-ups
  • 8 burpees, 8 sit-ups
  • Etc….all the way down to 1

Set timer for 8 minutes: Lunges/burpees

  • Do walking lunges, and then every minute on the minute do five burpees.
  • Count your lunges; the most lunges wins.

Tabatas (you can download a Tabata timer app on your iPhone)

  • Eight rounds of 20 seconds hard work and 10 seconds rest: Do each exercise for all eight rounds then move to the next exercise. Four exercises at four minutes each, with one minute rest between moves equals a 20 minute workout.
  • Body weight squats
  • Burpees
  • Sit-ups
  • Pushups

You will feel better after squeezing in some fitness during such a hectic time.
