Canton’s historical buildings will be used by the movie, Hidden Figures, which follows three African-American women who served as the brains behind NASA’s Friendship 7 mission, which saw astronaut John Glenn become the first American to orbit the Earth in February 1962.
Taraji P. Henson (best known for her role of Cookie in Empire) will play Katherine Johnson, Octavia Spencer (best known for her role as Minnie Jackson in The Help) will play Dorothy Vaughan and pop star Janelle Monae will play the youngest member of the trio, Mary Jackson. Kevin Costner will co-star as the head of the space program.
Bill Grant, Canton’s Ward 11 Council Member confirmed that 20th Century Fox is filming some scenes in the old Cotton Mill Office building as it will be utilized for its historic character. The City of Canton acquired this building along with the old grammar school from the Cherokee County School District in a land swap deal for acreage at the Bluffs. “This is a win for the preservation of Canton’s historic assets!” stated Grant.
According to The Cherokee Tribune , the city will receive $2,500 for leasing of the buildings and more for the use of leasing of the fluorescent fixtures. Hopefully, the cast, crew, and fans will then spill into the surrounding restaurants and retail shops. We think the stars should check out our favorite Canton retail store, B.Loved, and treat themselves to something nice for working so hard!
Last year, when Michael Keaton filmed, The Founder, The Snug gastropub had a funny sign inviting him in saying “Free Drinks if your name is Michael Keaton!” I love how the city embraces and welcomes Hollywood.
Filming will begin in the next few weeks as they have leased the building from March 7 – 24. Stay tuned — we hope to have some star sightings!
A Canton Patch article shows the streets blocked off and this quote from 20th Century Fox:
“Despite our presence in your neighborhood, you will still be able to access your homes and all businesses will still be open,” 20th Century Fox’s Locations Department said in a letter to the city. “We will have a private security company present for this reason. We realize that we are guests in your neighborhood and appreciate your cooperation and assistance during our time here.”
