In the first week of February, Panera Bread will finally break ground in downtown Canton according to Randy Saxon of Atlanta Community Real Estate. Don Harris, the mixed-use developer, will also be the franchisee and owner of Canton’s 5,500 square-foot Panera Bread, which will also have a drive-thru.
We first wrote about this multi-use development back in May of 2016. A year later in June of 2017, one of the original tenants, The Rusty Zipper, decided not to lease the space anymore.
The property being revitalized is the old Canton Elementary school and the Old Mill offices at 147 Academy Street and will have 211 parking spots — critical in downtown Canton! This is part of a ten-year vision for the city: #CantonForward: Etowah to the Loop.
New design (above) by Greenberg Farrow. The darker yellow rectangle in the lower right is the planed Panera Bread. This design also calls for an unnamed outdoor cafe and patio in the lower left quadrant, so stay tuned for details. This rendering is different than we originally shared back in 2016.
If you haven’t been to downtown Canton in awhile, you should check out North street with Local On North, Steep Tea House and several new retail stores including Southern Collective and Southernite Interiors. If you haven’t tried the southern food at Zack Kell’s Queenies restaurant yet, you don’t know what you’re missing!

Thank you to Mr. Saxon for giving us the exclusive Scoop!
