Granville Automatic
Jul 11 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Led by a modern-day Linda Ronstadt, Granville Automatic writes songs the Associated Press calls “haunting tales of sorrow and perseverance.” With influences as diverse as The Smiths, Emmylou Harris, Simon & Garfunkel and Dawes, Granville Automatic has created a one-of-a-kind sound that revolves around their passion for storytelling. The duo, comprised of Nashville songwriters Vanessa Olivarez and Elizabeth Elkins, is named after a 19th-century typewriter.

Sound Culture Live!
Jul 11 @ 9:00 pm – 11:30 pm

Defined by their powerful vocals, smooth reggae pulse and big guitar solos, Sound Culture’s first EP release has given body to its vast collective of styles. Guitar-wielding brothers Shawn and Josh Lumsden shred riffs symptomatic of growing up to rock & roll in the American South. It’s been said more than once that Erik Gravy Graves’ voice resembles that of Brandon Boyd from Incubus. Graves’ longtime friend Brandon Street sends low frequency melodies through his nicely dialed G&L/Mark Bass rig. All of this to the beat of metal/country/reggae-inspired drummer Taylor Hunt.

Riley is a 22 year old singer/songwriter from the Northern suburbs of Atlanta. Her distinctive sound can best be described pop with an edgy soulful twist.
Riley has enjoyed singing since she was a young girl, and at 13 she picked up her first guitar and began writing songs. By age 14, her open mic performances drew strong local acclaim and quickly transitioned to paid three set performances in venues all over North Georgia. At Age 15, Grammy winning producer Matt Still (Outkast, Elton John, BB King, Joss Stone, Lady Gaga, Patti LaBelle, Jewel) discovered her singing and songwriting talent on YouTube and took her to Elton John who immediately signed her to his international music management company Rocket Music (Elton John, Ed Sheeran,). Rocket music was instrumental in providing Riley with opportunities to develop of her songwriting and vocal skills. Her work with dozens of established writers and producers in Los Angeles, New York, Nashville, Atlanta, Canada and France led to her signing a publishing agreement on her 18th birthday with the world’s largest publishing company, Sony/ATV. Riley continued to perform solo or with her band in Atlanta, Nashville, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York and France, logging over 350 paid performances before the age of 20. Using youtube covers, many of which were self-produced live recordings, Riley organically built a huge social media following approaching 400 thousand fans, including over 262,000 youtube subscribers and 75 thousand Facebook fans. After leaving Rocket Music and striking out on her own, Riley decide to audition for Season 9 of the hit television show The Voice. TasteBud Live!
Jul 18 @ 9:00 pm – 11:30 pm

Originally started by lead guitarist Ryan Given, Tastebud has over thirty combined years experience in the music industry and has been gaining some serious traction in the greater Atlanta area. With all members having very similar but distinct backgrounds they all bring them heavy focus on styles like jazz, funk, southern rock, and psychedelic jams. Tastebud has been described as, ” A group that really brings the magic with them, to every venue they play.”
When TasteBud was started five years ago, the band played in a few small venues right outside of the D.C. area and later relocated to Atlanta. After the band took a couple years off to develop and refine their sound, TasteBud emerged as a promising talent in the Atlanta Music Scene. TasteBud has always been a band that was built on a foundation of friendship and family. A positive message that is associated with their music is the core value that is brought with them at every show they play.
After five years, Tastebud has a sound that is more refined than ever and we are constantly looking for ways to improve our sound. TasteBud’s mission is to create a jam-style listening experience like never before!

With a deep respect for lyrical storytelling, cellist/singer-songwriter SHANA TUCKER delivers a unique voice through her self-described genre of ChamberSoul™. Shana’s melodies weave strong hints of jazz, classical, soulful folk, acoustic pop and a touch of R&B into a distinctive rhythmic tapestry.
Touted by JazzTimes Magazine as a jazz talent “…whose imprint and vitality has already been quite visible…” Shana’s style and sound as been described as a blend of Dianne Reeves, Joni Mitchell, and Tracy Chapman, with an efficient complexity that is reminiscent of Bill Withers. ChamberSoul™ best describes what the listener should expect when experiencing Shana’s music. “I’m intrinsically drawn to “real” instruments, with resonance, tone and depth that can sound without amplification. Whenever and however possible, I always try to set a tone of acoustic intimacy with my colleagues on stage, and also with the audience, so that the music, performers and audience feel close and tangible, no matter the size the venue.”
Growing up on Long Island, NY as a beneficiary of public school arts education, Shana’s classical cello and singing talents awarded her a scholarship to Howard University in Washington, DC, where she was first introduced to jazz and other essential musical resources, on campus and around the city. While at Howard, Shana initiated her improvisation chops and honed her songwriting skills, but decided to relocate to NYC to study with master cellist Marion Feldman and complete her undergraduate studies in performance at CUNY-Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music.
An NPR interview about Shana’s debut CD, “SHiNE” and her ChamberSoul style prompted an invitation from Cirque du Soleil to join the company as cellist/vocalist for their show, KÀ in Las Vegas, where she stayed and performed for five years before returning to North Carolina. With collaborations as the cornerstone of her artistry, Shana is currently a featured artist performing with legendary jazz saxophonist/composer Bennie Maupin; jazz drummer/composer Shirazette Tinnin and Sonic WallPaper; Grammy-nominated NuSoul collective, The Foreign Exchange. Her newest project, Women’s Work, a female-led collective of jazz, soul and pop singer-songwriters and musicians representing both east and west coasts.
Having opened for internationally-acclaimed artists including Norah Jones, Lisa Fischer, Sweet Honey in the Rock, Hamiet Bluett, Javon Jackson, the Blind Boys of Alabama, and Indigo Girls, Shana’s vocals and cello are featured on several studio and live recording projects by both independent and signed label artists and producers. She also devotes a considerable amount of her time to working with students in schools & universities, community centers and summer camps throughout the year as part of her mission to promote arts education programming for students of all ages.
Shana is a recipient of two Nevada Arts Council grants, including the prestigious Performing Artist Fellowship for her exemplary work as a singer-songwriter, cellist and teaching artist. She serves on review panels and advisory committees for arts organizations across the country. She is also a board member for Carolina Wren Press, a Durham, NC-based small-press organization that publishes diverse minority writers of quality fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and children’s literature. A front-line advocate for arts education, Shana is a newly-designated A+ (Arts Integration) Schools Apprentice Fellow, and has been a teaching artist with Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts (NC and NV) since 2015. She has also been a teaching artist with United Arts Council of Raleigh/Wake County NC and The Smith Center for Performing Arts – Las Vegas. Shana incorporates artist-in-residences, workshops and community outreach opportunities wherever in the world her performances take her.
This performance is funded in part by a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and Georgia Council for the Arts.

Ben Jarrell
Jul 25 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Born a stone’s throw from the swamps of southern Alabama and in particular the city of Dothan, Ben Jarrell’s early musical influences were derived from his close family members. Dad loved Rock N Roll, especially hard rock. Stepmom brought classic rock and modern country into the home. However it was Grandma who led him to more traditional country music. From Alabama to Waylon Jennings and on to Willie Nelson and Johnny Paycheck Ben acquired a taste for what was then branded Outlaw Country Music.
Ben’s most recent work included the release of his first record “Troubled Times”. It is a compilation of life experiences and those that have touched him. This music resonates within Ben Jarrell and he is sure that it will resonate in you. The journey is far from over so hop on and see what the future brings for Ben Jarrell’s Roadside Revival!

Blair Crimmins and the Hookers
Jul 25 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Blair Crimmins began his current music career in Atlanta, Georgia, with a determination to bring Ragtime and 1920’s style Dixieland Jazz to new audiences. While playing small rock clubs around the Southeast he developed a sound that is at once modern while being deeply rooted in the past. Now four years, and five hundred shows later, he has toured the country playing large venues and has opened for acts such as Mumford & Sons and Preservation Hall Jazz Band. A multi-instrumentalist and music academic, Crimmins writes songs and arrangements for a classic New Orleans style horn section consisting of trumpet, clarinet and trombone.
His debut 2010 release The Musical Stylings Of became a college radio sensation on WRAS Atlanta making him the most requested band on the air. In 2012 Crimmins showed his musical diversity by writing and recording the full score for the independent short film “Old Man Cabbage”. The following year, Crimmins was the critics pick for Best Song Writer of 2013 in Creative Loafing’s Best of ATL issue. His last album entitled Sing-a-longs! went to #21 on the EuroAmerican radio chart and earned him a nomination at The Georgia Music Awards for Best Jazz Artist. Blair Crimmins has now released his anticipated 4th studio album You Gotta Sell Something.

Fusion Guitarist Scott Henderson
Aug 7 @ 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm

Guitarist Scott Henderson’s has finished the most ambitious project of his career, and he’s bringing it to The Velvet Note!
Scott’s innate talents overwhelmed both the music scene and music schools of his native South Florida before he moved to Los Angeles 40 years ago. Yet he didn’t relocate for stardom, eschewing his previous sideman roles with Chick Corea, Jean-Luc Ponty, and Weather Report’s Joe Zawinul to form his own band Tribal Tech, active from 1984-2013. Henderson’s solo recording career started in 1994, and his new People Mover release is one of the high-water marks among the half-dozen efforts under his own name.
Another was its predecessor, the similarly self-released Vibe Station from 2015, with bassist Travis Carlton and drummer Alan Hertz. This time, Henderson features an even younger rhythm section in French musicians Romain Labaye (bass) and Archibald Ligonnière (drums), with equally explosive results. Henderson has always mixed his jazz/fusion guitar influences (like Allan Holdsworth) with those based in rock (Deep Purple’s Ritchie Blackmore) and blues (Stevie Ray Vaughan), and does so from his opening chimes of “Transatlantic,” which segues between tranquil and high-octane sections, the latter featuring his signature soloing accents. “Primary Location” veers funkier, showcasing the rhythmic emphasis in both Henderson’s playing and composition and highlighting Labaye’s fretless tones and harmonics.
This performance will feature:
Scott Henderson – guitar
Archibald Ligonniere – drums
Romain Labaye – bass

Fort Defiance
Aug 8 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm

What happens when two people who swore not to date each other start a band?
They get married, move into a van, and hit the road with their dog and newborn kitten, of course!
After meeting in a honky tonk (as all good Christian couples do), Jordan Eastman and Laurel lane did just that; forming Fort Defiance in attempt to branch out their solo careers, the pair began performing on street corners and dive bar stages around the south east and their native Nashville, TN.
Within a year, the two were playing over 250 shows a year and gradually expanding their reach across the US.
Although only a duo, Fort Defiance is far from the quiet singer/songwriter pair that’s typically expected. Offsetting their guitar and banjo dynamic with punk-rooted energy, booming stomp boxes, home made instrumentation and often playing numerous instruments at once; the duo creates what The Listening Room (Mobile, AL) described as “an incredible, unbelievably, enormously-huge sound for two people.”
